Robotic MR Fusion Prostate Biopsy

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men. Early diagnosis greatly increases the success of treatment. The most reliable method for diagnosing prostate cancer is prostate biopsy.

Prostate Cancer and the Importance of Early Detection

The classic biopsy method is performed rectally under ultrasound guidance. However, this method may be insufficient to detect cancerous tissue in some cases. Today, MR fusion biopsy, which provides more accurate results, is preferred in patients suspected of having prostate cancer.

In modern medicine, early diagnosis means not only knowing the presence of cancer, but also determining the exact location of the tumor and the risk of its spread. Advanced imaging techniques, which come into play at this point, directly influence the patient’s treatment process, enabling a more comfortable and reliable course of treatment.

How is an MR Fusion Prostate Biopsy Performed?

The procedure is planned with the patient’s comfort and safety in mind. Multiparametric MRI images taken in the first stage mark “suspicious foci” on the prostate with millimeter precision. During the biopsy, these images are superimposed (fused) with real-time ultrasound images using specialized software.

Using a 3D map displayed on the screen, the doctor guides the needle directly to the suspected cancerous target. This method aims to pinpoint the crucial area with 100% accuracy, while minimizing the risk of damage to healthy tissue. Especially when performed perineally (through the skin) rather than rectally, this method reduces the risk of post-procedure infection and sepsis to almost zero, shortening the patient’s hospital stay.

Advantages of Robotic MR Fusion Biopsy

The inclusion of robotic technology in this process completely eliminates minor deviations such as human hand tremors or angle errors.

Robotic arms ensure pinpoint accuracy by combining MRI data with biopsy needle results, eliminating the margin of error. This precision is vital, especially for patients who have undergone previous biopsies without success or whose PSA levels continue to rise.

In addition, because the tissue samples obtained using robotic methods are much clearer and of higher quality, the pathological examination process is also more efficient. Patients can confidently move on to the next stage of treatment (robotic surgery or follow-up) with a definitive and clear diagnosis, without worrying about whether a tumor was missed.

Robotic MR Fusion Prostate Biopsy - Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is MR Fusion Biopsy, and how does it differ from a traditional biopsy?
In classic biopsies, random samples are taken using ultrasound, whereas in MR Fusion, detailed MRI images taken beforehand are superimposed using ultrasound. This allows for “targeted” imaging to precisely locate the tumor, rather than “blind” imaging.
Robotic technology reduces the risk of tremors or millimeter-scale errors in the human hand to zero. Robotic arms combine MRI data with biopsy needles, ensuring precise targeting.
No. The procedure is usually performed under mild sedation or anesthesia, so the patient does not feel any pain or discomfort.
Classic biopsies performed rectally carry a higher risk of infection. With the perineal method, however, the procedure is performed through the skin, reducing the risk of infection and sepsis to almost zero.
Robotic MR Fusion is currently the “gold standard” method for diagnosing prostate cancer, minimizing the margin of error. Because it locates suspicious foci with millimeter precision, its diagnostic accuracy is close to 100%.
6. What should those do who have a high PSA level but a clear previous biopsy result?
This method is life-saving for patients in this situation. Hidden tumors in areas that classic biopsies cannot reach or see can be clearly detected thanks to robotic fusion.
No, hospitalization is usually not required. After a short observation period following the procedure, our patients can return home the same day.
Because the samples are collected much more clearly and with higher quality using robotic methods, the pathological examination process proceeds more smoothly. Results are usually available within a few days.
Because perineal and robotic methods offer a very comfortable recovery, our patients can usually return to their normal daily routines the next day.
